Paper 1 Guide
Section A vs. Section B: Understanding the "SAQ to ERQ" Jump
Many students lose marks because they treat Section A and Section B the same. They aren't. Here is the definitive breakdown.
The Comparison Table
| Feature | Section A (SAQs) | Section B (ERQs) |
|---|---|---|
| Mark Value | 9 Marks | 22 Marks |
| Suggested Time | 20 Minutes | 60 Minutes |
| Structure | Describe → Explain | Introduction → Body → Evaluation → Conclusion |
| Critical Thinking | Not required (but helpful) | Mandatory (7 marks) |
| Studies Needed | 1 Study | 2+ Studies |
The Strategy
Section A: Precision
Use the "Describe, Explain, Apply" model. No intro, no outro — just the facts. Every sentence should directly answer the question.
Section B: Argument
You aren't just summarising — you are debating. You need "The Counter-Argument" to score in the top band. Critical thinking is worth 7 of the 22 marks.
