Understanding the Matrix

Biological Approach

Focuses on the physical basis of behavior, including brain structures, neurotransmitters, genetics, and physiological processes. This approach uses methods like brain imaging and animal models to understand how biological factors influence behavior.

Cognitive Approach

Examines mental processes such as perception, memory, attention, and problem-solving. This approach investigates how people process information and how these cognitive processes shape behavior and experience.

Sociocultural Approach

Emphasizes the role of social and cultural factors in shaping behavior. This approach considers how group norms, cultural values, social interactions, and environmental contexts influence individual behavior and development.

Study Tips for Paper 1A & 1B

Master the concepts: Understand each concept deeply, not just the name. Be able to explain what it is and how it applies to behavior.

Compare approaches: Practice comparing how the same behavior or phenomenon is explained differently by each approach.

Use examples: For each concept, have at least one real-world example or research study that demonstrates it.

Evaluate strengths and limitations: Each approach has strengths and limitations. Be prepared to discuss both.

Integrate knowledge: Practice explaining how concepts from different approaches can work together to provide a more complete understanding of behavior.
